    Pay-to-Play Annual Disclosure - A Compliance Seminar and Update on Recent Legal Developments Including Citizens United

    Genova Burns will host a breakfast seminar on Monday, March 1, 2010 where the Corporate Political Activity Law Practice Group will explain the annual NJ ELEC Business Entity reporting requirement in a seminar entitled, “Pay-to-Play Annual Disclosure - A Compliance Seminar and Update on Recent Legal Developments Including Citizens United.”  This program will help companies meet the March 30, 2010 filing requirement, explain which government contracts and whose political contributions must be reported, and discuss how the Citizens United decision will affect corporate political activity and compliance strategies, among other topics.

    Dena B. Calo to Speak on Social Media Policies at the Institute of Real Estate Management Tri-State Conference & Expo

    Counsel Dena B. Calo will speak at the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) Tri-State Conference & Expo in an education session entitled, “Social Media Policy or What Wasn’t in the Marketing Plan!”  Ms. Calo will discuss social media mishaps and the creation, development and dissemination of social media policies.  The conference will be held on February 18th at The Borgata Hotel, Casino and Spa in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

    Jason L. Sobel Elected to the Board of Trustees for Boys and Girls Clubs of Newark

    Counsel Jason L. Sobel was elected to the Board of Trustees for the Boys and Girls Club of Newark (BGCN).  Established in 1938, the BGCN is a non-profit, privately operated youth development organization that serves the needs of young people through educational and recreational programs in Newark and the neighboring towns. The Boys and Girls Clubs programs help to instill good character traits and enable its members to develop positive relationships.

    Mr. Sobel is a member of the Commercial Real Estate, Redevelopment & Environmental Law and is based in the firm’s Red Bank, New Jersey office.

    Congratulations to the Honorable Francis J. Vernoia

    Our firm extends its warmest congratulations to our dear friend, partner and colleague, Francis J. Vernoia, on his appointment to the Superior Court of New Jersey.  Judge Vernoia will take the bench in the Law Division, Monmouth County.  Hereafter, the firm will be known as Genova Burns.

    PolitickerNJ.com Reports on Today’s Supreme Court Ruling on Campaign Finance; Rebecca Moll Freed Quoted

    PolitickerNJ.com writes on today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling which will ease restrictions on independent spending by corporations in federal elections.  Rebecca Moll Freed, Counsel at Genova, Burns & Vernoia, was quoted regarding the impact the decision may have on New Jersey state campaign finance and “pay-to-play” laws.

    United States Supreme Court Decides Citizens United Case

    Today, in a 5-4 ruling, the United States Supreme Court changed the Constitutional landscape for campaign finance reform.  In Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission, the Court lifted the long-standing ban on corporate and union independent expenditures in federal elections, but upheld Federal Election Commission disclosure and disclaimer requirements on those ads.

    Laurence D. Laufer to Speak at New York State Bar Association Annual Meeting on Recent Major Developments in Campaign Finance

    Partner Laurence D. Laufer will speak at the New York State Bar Association Annual Meeting in an educational program entitled, “The State Legislature and the State Constitution: The Path Forward” on Tuesday, January 26th.  Mr. Laufer will specifically address major elements of recent New York legislative proposals to reform campaign financing, including consideration of the impact of today’s landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Citizens United case.  The program will include speakers Justin Levitt of the Brennan Center for Justice and Mark F. Glasser of Greenberg Traurig and moderator Michael Hutter of the Albany Law School.

    In coordination with the Newark Regional Business Partnership, Genova, Burns & Vernoia will present a seminar entitled, “Yellow Brick Road or Pothole Highway: Benefits and Risks of LLCs.” The seminar will address the unique tax and business structures of LLCs and will include speakers Keith A. Krauss, Esq., Counsel at Genova, Burns & Vernoia and Wilfredo Fernandez, CPA, Partner at Citrin Cooperman & Company, LLP and will be moderated by Lawrence Flack, Senior Vice President of Valley National Bank.  This breakfast seminar will be held at the Newark Regional Business Partnership office on Friday, February 12 from 8 – 10 a.m.

    Genova, Burns & Vernoia is pleased to announce the promotions of Dena B. Calo and Jason L. Sobel to Counsel. 

     

    Ms. Calo, who joined the firm in August of 2007, is based in the firm’s Camden, New Jersey office where she concentrates her practice in employment litigation on behalf of employers.

     

    Mr. Sobel, who joined the firm in August of 2004, is based in the firm’s Red Bank office and focuses his practice on all aspects of commercial real estate transactions including leasing and financing.
